So, your research on cruisers and Dinghys has brought you as far as the Landyachtz Dinghy Blunt. What's so blunt about it then, and what's it offering that the classic Dinghy doesn't?
What is a Landyachtz Dinghy Blunt?
The Dinghy Blunt is a small (28.5" x 8.6") cruiser skateboard produced by Landyachtz Longboards. As the classic Dinghy rose in popularity around 2016, Landyachtz expanded the lineup to first include different graphic options, and later new shapes too. Thus the Dinghy Blunt and the Tugboat were born.
What's the difference between a Dinghy and a Dinghy Blunt?
The Dinghy is 8" wide and the Dinghy Blunt is 8.6" wide. The extra width is mostly up front, where your front foot will be placed. This allows the shape to taper towards the back, for an overall more directional aesthetic than the classic Dinghy.
The extra width also allows it to use wider trucks - 130mm compared to the 105mm of the classic Dinghy. This translates to a little extra stability and smoother carving compared to the ultra-reactiveness of the narrower truck.
Is the Landyachtz Dinghy Blunt good for beginners?
As discussed on the Landyachtz Dinghy page, beginners are often looking for stability - something not found in abundance with a Dinghy Blunt. However, the Dinghy Blunt has extra width on the trucks and the deck which will increase that stability over that of the regular Dinghy.
Or, maybe, you just love that Dinghy Blunt shape with its sleek taper and it just makes you wanna jump on and go skate! In which case, it's the best beginner board you could ask for. All the reading in the world won't touch the feeling of getting out there and riding. In fact, I think it'd be prudent for me to get some fresh air after all this typing...my board is looking at me from under my desk...
Can you ollie on a Landyachtz Dinghy Blunt?
Most certainly. The tail geometry is perfect for the 63mm wheels and the boards have great pop with a 7 ply Canadian maple construction.
If there's a trick you can do on a popsicle, we bet you can manage it on the Dinghy Blunt. Bear in mind that the extra width of the Dinghy Blunt means it'll flip slower than the classic shape. But then, if you're doing a lot of flip tricks then you're probably already perfectly aware of how an 8.6" wide deck is going to feel!
Are all Landyachtz Dinghy Blunt the same?
Almost! At the time of writing there are multiple graphic options for the Dinghy Blunt and two variations on the concave:
- Dinghy Blunt
- Dinghy Blunt Fender: raised wheel arches
The "fenders" are a 3D feature of the concave that slightly raise the deck up over the wheels. This helps to avoid wheelbite, so is a great option if you want to add bigger wheels at a later date. It also does provide some extra feedback for your feet when you're riding about - this can be great for riding aggressively, faster and sliding especially. However, if you're looking to mostly cruise then the regular version will be less likely to cause any foot-ache after a long day on the board.
Are there any alternatives to a Landyachtz Dinghy Blunt?
The Dinghy Blunt is far from the only cruiser skateboard available and the price tag can be offputting, especially to beginners. Luckily, there are a plethora of other mini cruisers available from a host of respected brands! Some great alternatives are:
- Landyachtz Dinghy Blunt
- Lush Longboards Fuel
- Lush Longboards Nomad
- Loaded Ballona
- Arbor Pilsner
