A Good Hill and No Traffic?

It's that time again...

For decades, longboarders have gathered on the day of the Bristol Half Marathon.

Not to cheer anybody on, but to take full advantage of one of Bristols most iconic hills being shut to traffic!

This year its in 2 weeks time: Sunday 10th May.

It's not official, sanctioned or insured... but it is closed, and that's enough for us.

Bridge Valley Road is a fairly steep hill. Traffic-free, it offers a perfect opportunity to practise carving, footbraking and sliding in a supportive environment.

The Cult Chronicles from a few weeks ago are generally considered the top wheel for learning to slide as they're so forgiving at low speeds. BVR can offer a little more than that - in step the Cult Creator:

Still creamy, still forgiving, but with a little more feedback and braking power in the slide and therefore happier on a bigger hill.

Bridge Valley Road is easily accessible with public transport - just a miles skate from Clifton Down station.

And for anyone needing a little extra support with their slides, Danielle is running paid slide lessons via Soulfulskateco:

  • 09:00 Adults (beginners)
  • 10:15 Adults (intermediate)
  • 11:30 Kids!

The road usually opens up sometime early afternoon, by which time we're pretty well skated out and have gone to find a snack.

The afternoon can continue however you like - a good contingent will likely head south to hit up Brunel Way pumptrack followed by Ashton Court for the evening session.

Keep those helmets on,
Matt @ Vandem

It's a real kick to have a usually busy road to yourself, your mates and your skateboard.
