Split angle trucksets from Sabre Trucks have landed, and with it the gold standard for a longboard truckset has shifted.

What are split angles?

A split angle setup simply means that the baseplate angle (or pivot angle) is not the same on the front and back truck. 

In a regular/symmetrical truck set up, your front and back truck each do an equal amount of turning.

In a split angle setup, the front truck handles most of the turning whilst the back follows along.

But why is a split angle setup so good?

Imagine if you were driving your car down the motorway and when you turned the steering wheel, both your front and back wheels turned the same amount. Carnage!

It's much more stable to have the back wheels doing less turning and more following.

By adding all that stability in the back, you can loosen up the front whilst still feeling more solid and planted than before.

The end result is that split angle setups are:

• More agile at low speeds
• More stable at high speeds
• Easier to pump
• Carve with more lean, closer to the feeling of a snowboard or surfboard

What is the downside of a split angle setup?

It feels a bit naff to skate backwards! You certainly wouldn't want to do that at any speed. For disciplines of skating that demand a lot of time in fakie (transition, dance/freestyle, freeride), you're better off sticking to a standard symmetrical truck setup.

So there you have it...

Everything you need to ride a split angle setup - including spare bushings and washers so you can ride harder in the back, or even double barrels, and still have all the washers you need to do it.
